How To Plan A Romantic Getaway To Stockholm

With a fascinating history dating back to Viking times, Stockholm quickly captivates visitors with her timeless Medieval beauty and unique contemporary flair. Often called “The Venice of the North,” Stockholm lies across 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. Unsurprisingly, the fairytale-like city is as romantic as could be, whether you choose to visit when the spires of Old Town are capped with snow or the never-ending days of summer are near.

If you’re ready to fall in love with Stockholm—and your special someone—then here’s what you need to know to plan a romantic city escape you’ll long remember.

Dan and Casey are two adventurers extraordinaire documenting their travel tales at A Cruising Couple – adventure travel with a dash of class.

Where To Stay

Take a trip back in time with a stay at Sweden’s oldest continually running Inn: Stallmästaregården. This historic Bed and Breakfast oozes old world charm without sacrificing contemporary amenities and service. Overlooking the beautiful Bay of Brunnsviken and adjacent to the Royal Haga Park, Stallmästaregården is only a short walk or taxi ride to Stockholm’s historic centre, yet it feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the capital city.

It’s said that the quaint hotel was first established as an Inn when, in 1645, Queen Kristina was so taken with the residence that she decided to celebrate Midsummer there. The party was so grand that all of her guests spent the night—thus transforming Stallmastaregarden into the “hotel” it remains today.

What To Do

Wander

Start your romantic getaway in Stockholm with a picture-perfect stroll through Gamla stan, or Old Town. One of the best-preserved Medieval city centres in the world, this is storybook Stockholm. Amble hand-in-hand along winding cobblestone streets and past iconic yellow buildings. Take your time hopping into any of the countless shops and corner cafes along the way. Gamla stan is also where you’ll find a variety of magnificent buildings, including Sweden’s national cathedral and the sweeping Royal Palace.

Old Town Stockholm

Continue your wandering at Monteliusvägen, a charming 500-meter walking path lined with quaint houses and a swoon-worthy view of Lake Mälaren and Old Town. The path is especially lovely at sunrise or sunset, and just so happens to be a popular spot for lovebirds to pop the question.

For one of the best picnic spots in the city, head to Djurgården. Easily accessible from central Stockholm, the idyllic park offers plenty of spots for walking, biking, canoeing or simply relaxing in the grass on a warm spring day. If you want to infuse your romantic getaway with a touch of history and culture, Djurgården is also where you’ll find 22 of Stockholm’s museums.

Cruise

Take advantage of Stockholm’s unique location near a vast archipelago with an enchanting river cruise. Set out at sunset and soak in the lovely surrounding greenery and forests while dining on traditional Swedish fare and cocktails. Or, if adventure is more your style, join a high-speed boat tour to a variety of the archipelago’s jewels.

Revitalize

Open since 1904, the baths at Centralbadet are oozing with romance and charm. Here you can enjoy a leisurely couples’ swim, iconic Swedish sauna, and hot and cold baths, all in a lovely art-nouveau building. Add on a massage for the ultimate in relaxation.

Shop

Find the perfect high-quality souvenir to remember your rendezvous in Stockholm at Castor Konsthantverk. This lovely shop features a variety of handicrafts and artwork from Sweden, with everything from indigenous Sami leatherwork to one-of-a-kind jewellery.

Of course, Stockholm is always at the cutting-edge of fashion trends and home design. Acne (the renowned denim brand) boasts five studios throughout the city. The chic designer prefers art studios to old-fashioned stores, which always makes for a unique shopping experience. For interior design, head to Svenskt Tenn. Founded in 1924, the elegant shop is renowned for its distinctive textiles as well as designers Estrid Ericson and Josef Frank.

Where To Eat

One of the most romantic restaurants in Stockholm also provides one of the most picturesque views: Erik’s Gondolen. Perched atop a stand-alone elevator shaft and skywalk, the cozy Gondolen rises high above the Slussen metro area, offering a spectacular dining experience over downtown Stockholm. The chocolate tartare pairs especially well with the sweeping view. You’ll want to make reservations well in advance, especially if you plan on timing your visit with the sunset.

For innovative Swedish cuisine that features fresh takes on traditional recipes from around the country, Smörgåstårteriet is a fantastic choice. Splurge on the tasting menu and wine pairing for the ultimate taste-testing journey. Oaxen Krog and Slip is another ultra-sleek dining experience located in Djurgården. All ingredients at this restaurant are locally sourced from within Scandinavia—and sometimes as local as the vegetable and herb garden next door. Even the furniture and cutlery are made from local Swedish artisans.

Where To Drink

The Swedes love their coffee breaks, so much so that it is an integral part of Swedish culture. Don’t miss the opportunity to join in the ritual with a fika, or traditional Swedish coffee and pastry. The old-fashioned, castle-like building of Flickorna Helin Voltaire is as romantic as it comes, with a divine location in Djurgarden. Look for a spot on the pleasant veranda, the perfect spot to cozy up for an afternoon.

Nightlife in Stockholm is trendy and chic, with plenty of A-lister lounges. Start in the bohemian neighbourhood of Södermalm for some of the swankiest options around.

Södra Teatern is one of Stockholm’s top theatres, but whether or not you stay for a show, the adjacent Sodra Bar and Kitchen is well worth a visit. Live music, lingonberry cocktails and a lovely terrace are just a few of the highlights. If you prefer to get bundled up and close-and-cozy with your loved one, then the Ice Bar is the perfect excuse. Don a faux fur coat and try to stay warm in this bar where—you guessed it—everything is made from ice.
