If you’ve dreamt of trekking to see gorillas but love a bit of luxury, Wilderness Safaris’ new Rwandan lodge is for you. Scheduled to open in June 2017, Bisate Lodge will be one of the safari operator’s most opulent offerings. There will be just nine luxurious rooms, all located inside the natural amphitheatre of an extinct volcano cone. Bisate will be an excellent base for gorilla treks, but you won’t have to go far to spot them, because an extensive reforestation programme carried out by Wilderness means that the lodge will be located in the heart of prime gorilla territory.

Next year marks the 70th anniversary of Indian independence and cultural ties between the UK and India. There will be numerous events in both countries to mark the occasion, and Shakespeare’s First Folio (the first collected edition of the bard’s plays) will be touring India. If you’re planning on visiting, we recommend starting with Delhi, where a new Madame Tussauds will open in the summer. Hotel-wise, we’re in love with the ITC Maurya in New Delhi, which has just launched a brand new Food Sherpa Trail tour, aimed at guests hoping to sample the region’s finest street food.

China’s first ever Michelin guide launched in Shanghai this year, so what better time to check out this fantastic Chinese city? 31 Michelin stars were awarded to restaurants in China’s financial capital. As for recommended dishes? We’d start with baozi – steamed, filled breakfast buns guaranteed to energise you prior to a day pounding Shanghai’s streets. Cong you bing (scallion oil pancakes) is an incredibly popular street food, as are guotie – small pork dumplings.

Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon might sound like an unusual name for a theme park ride, but given that it’s the creation of Universal Orlando, which brought us the fantastic Wizarding World of Harry Potter, visitors are unlikely to be disappointed when it opens next year at Universal Studios Florida. Although details of the ride are being kept under wraps, we know it will be a 3D attraction. And there are plenty of other reasons to head to Orlando in 2017, including the unveiling of Universal’s Volcano Bay water park (expected to open in June) and The World of AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Go Star-spotting In Yellowstone

Tinted glasses at the ready! On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible from a 60-mile band of the earth which will stretch the width of the United States, and Wyoming will be one of the best places to see it. There’ll be numerous events leading up to the phenomenon, but Wyoming’s dark skies – and Yellowstone National Park in particular – are a great star-spotting destination any time of the year. If you don’t fancy roughing it, check into one of Xanterra Parks and Resorts’ fantastic lodges – our favourite is the wonderfully rustic Canyon Lodge and Cabins, which opens from May until September.

Train spotters heading to the land of the rising sun next year are spoiled for choice, because there are two fantastic new luxury trains launching. Twilight Express Mizukaze, which takes to the tracks in spring, will whisk passengers across western Japan and there’ll be just six luxurious sleeping cars per train. The even more luxurious Train Suite Shiki-Shima will also launch in spring. It will depart from Tokyo’s Ueno station before heading up to Hokkaido and will be one of Japan’s most luxurious trains, with decadent features which include a bath made from Japanese cypress.

From December, you’ll no longer have to head to the Maldives to experience over-water villas, thanks to Sandals. In December Sandals’ Royal Caribbean Resort in Montego Bay will unveil its over-water villas, followed by over-water bungalows in February. Guests at both will be able to view the local marine life through glass floor panels, and the spacious decking areas will have plunge pools and hammocks. The best bit? You’ll get your very own butler, just in case reaching for that frozen margherita sounds too much like hard work.

Seven nights in an over-water bungalow costs from £7,825 per person
