I spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Berlin, so I was going to tell you a bit about this city. Unfortunately, my experience of Berlin was restricted to Tegel airport, taxis rides and the inside of hotels so there is not much for me to tell! However, I did rent a car from Avis at Stansted Airport after my flight back to the UK so I thought it might be worth telling you a bit about the airport instead.

Stansted Airport is located about 30 miles North-East of London in the county of Essex and is easily accessible from the M11, just a short trip north of Junction 27 of the M25. It is fairly small in comparison to Heathrow but it is BAA’s third largest UK airport and is popular amongst the low-cost carriers.

As is with most of the BAA airports, much of Stansted’s estate is dedicated to retail shopping outlets including some of the usual suspects such as HMV, Dixons, Sunglass Hut and French Connection. If you are flying out of Stansted, there are still heightened security checks in place so I would advise allowing a little bit of extra time. It took me about 30 minutes to get through on Monday night. More information is available on the BAA Stansted airport website.

As I alluded earlier, Avis have a desk at Stansted Airport. However, if you are a member of Avis Preferred you can bypass this desk and head straight to the Avis cabin in the Car Hire Pick-up car park. Our Select Series cars are also available to book here.

That aside, the thing that impressed me most about our Stansted location is the staff (which to be honest is what has always impressed me when renting from our locations). You just get the sense that they really care, even stress about making things right for their customers. So why we try to avoid self-congratulation on the blog I do think it is worthwhile giving a mention to the front-line staff who make it all happen.

By coincidence, I bumped into Donald Hayes, the Avis station manager at Stansted, who tells me that he reads this blog. So you have any feedback then this is the place to post it! :o)

I have rented a few times at Standsted airport and have always loved the service there. As you said it really seems they care about you as the customer and the Avis company as well.

    Well done.

Additionally I just love how easy it is to walk from the terminal to the car pickup area.

Great, thanks for the feedback Karl! I’ll pass this on to Donald and his team.

It’s a good service – EXCEPT – just try to extend a booking – they NEVER answer the phone.
And of course it’s an 0870 number so you still pay when it’s not answered. I’ve tried phoning 16 times in the last 15 hours. So how do I extend a booking then?

  4. Rob White- Marketing, Avis UK Says:

Hi Tony, I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get in touch with anyone! I have fed this back to the station manager at Stansted.

In the meantime, if you could email me your phone number to comments@avis.co.uk, I can ask them to give you a call.

    Rob

You’re welcome Rob, would it be possible to get an email address for the station manager at Avis Stansted? I’d like to conduct a short email interview about your services there if thats OK.

    Cheers,

    Roger

I have used the Stansted desk on a number of times over the last couple of years since I moved to France. The staff have always been very helpfull and as a result I now use Avis for all my rentals.
One small point, on my last trip I was allocated a new VW Passatt estate. It had an electronic handbreak and no hand book. It took me and the attendant some time to work out how it worked. Perhaps a short briefing to staff might be called for.

Keep up the good work! I will be passing through again on 24th Jan so will say Hi.

    Yours

    Nick Coveyduck

  9. Stephen Spiers Says:

    Nick,

Thanks for the feedback. It’s great to hear that Stansted are looking after you and providing great service.

I’ll pass your comments onto the station manager about the car controls so we can try to improve our processes for the future.

    Stephen
