Driving within the London Congestion Charge zone (07:00-18:00 Monday – Friday) incurs a charge. When you rent a car with Avis it is your responsibility to pay the charge within the delay specified by Transport for London or they will issue you with a penalty charge notice for which you will be liable.  Avis do not pay the charge for you so please do ensure you pay to avoid fines.

There are no charges on weekends, public holidays, between Christmas Day and New Years Day inclusive or between 18:01 – 06.59.

The zone covers central London extending from Hyde Park and Victoria in the West to Vauxhall and Elephant & Castle in the South, Tower Bridge and Commercial Street in the East and Euston and Regent’s Park in the North. It includes the West End, Westminster, Buckingham Palace, the City of London and Oxford Street amongst other areas.

Avis car rental in London and help with the Congestion Charge.

Avis has 13 different pick-up locations in central London and 5 airport locations. Take a look at all our London car hire locations for details and quotes.

We will be happy to arrange a permit for the first day of your rental and add this to your rental charges. However, you’ll need to organise Congestion Charge payments for subsequent days.

If you have arranged for an Avis rental car to be delivered or collected and we have to drive through to congestion zone to get to you, you will still be liable to pay the Congestion Charge. Similarly, if we attempt to deliver but are unable to, the same rule applies.

Paying the charge

The charge is between £9 and £12 per day depending on how and when you pay the charge. You only need to pay once for a single day no matter how many times you use the Congestion Charge zone during that day.

You can either pay in advance or on the day of travel. If you don’t pay by midnight on the day after you drove in the Congestion Charge zone, you’ll receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

You can pay in a variety of ways:

CC Auto Pay
Online
By mobile (SMS)
By phone
By Automated Telephone Service
At a shop
By post

Around Paris – The beautiful Ile de France

Despite what Parisians might think, there’s a whole world outside the city borders to explore in an Avis hire car. Central Paris is beautiful, but there you can easily see another side to it: the green forests where the French kings used to hunt, nearby Normandy, home to crêpes and cider and chic racing in Chantilly.

Test drive this two-day tour for the best of the Ile de France.

Pick up your Avis vehicle from our car hire location at Gare du Nord Paris if you arrive by Eurostar or at any of the Paris airports. Motor through the countryside to elegant Chantilly for a day at the races, then spend your winnings buying souvenir bottles of champagne to take home, in the cellars of Reims and the Marne Valley, within easy drive of the city. Feeling active? Try your hand at rock-climbing in the royal forest of Fontainebleau before taking country lanes to the village of Gallardon and a meal fit for a king. Wind up your motoring holiday with a stroll around the overwhelmingly grand palace of Versailles before heading back to the airport. Drop off your hire car in Paris at any of the airports or Eurostar terminal or check other locations for Avis Rent a Car in Paris

Why not share it with your partner and make this a romantic break for two?

Jutland jaunts – See the best of Denmark’s showcase coastline in an Avis hire car.

The roads around Jutland are a driver’s dream. Quiet country lanes wind through gentle hills and thick forest to miles of untouched beaches, where the Danes come to holiday. After a long day on the golf course or exploring the lakes, give way to evenings in grand medieval castles, and you can go from the bustle of a top casino to the calm of your own stretch of golden beach in a single afternoon.

Test drive this two-day tour for the best of Billund

Pick up your hire car from our Avis Aarhus city location and head north to the calm of the Silkeborg lakes, before a night of luxury back at Aarhusgrand Hotel Royal. In the morning it’s a short but glorious drive to see the sharks at Kattegat Centre, and then cross-country for golf and dinner in Viborg. Round off your trip by heading west to the Danes’ favourite beach, Hvide Sande. Then drive back across the Danish peninsula – it’s just 50km – and drop off your vehicle at the Aarhus city or Aarhus airport location. It’s a perfect place to drive – brilliantly signposted, mainly flat and compact, putting everything within easy driving distance.

One of the most common concerns when hiring a car is what to do if you don’t have both parts of your UK driving licence. Whether you have lost your driving licence or overlooked it when packing for your trip, it may still be possible to hire a car with Avis in the UK or abroad without both parts of your licence.

The current UK driving licence has two parts – a plastic, credit card-sized photo card licence and a green paper counterpart licence displaying any endorsements. Many people still have an ‘old-style’ pink and green paper licence, which are still perfectly acceptable. Licences are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

When renting a car with Avis you need to have:

  • A full, valid driving licence that has been held for at least 36 months at the time of rental.
  • No more than 6 points on your licence. With more than 6 points or a DD, DR or BA endorsement that is not older than 10 years or if you are renting abroad, please contact the rental station where you want to pick up your car.
  • For rentals in other countries, please check the terms and conditions of the renting country prior to booking. These can be found during the Avis online booking journey, or by calling 0844 581 0147.
  • If your licence is in non-roman alphabet (e.g. Japanese), you will need the original licence AND an international driving licence.

Renting in the USA

When renting in the USA, you can rent a car with your photo card licence only, or with your paper counterpart licence and your passport. If you have neither part you cannot hire a car from an Avis office in the USA.

If you are travelling with someone else who has their licence, they can hire the car and add you as an additional driver. If the reservation is in your name, you will need to make another reservation in the name of the licence-holder and obtain a refund for your initial reservation by contacting 08445 818181.

Renting in Europe

You can collect your car with a valid paper counterpart licence and photographic identification (e.g. passport).

Many offices will let you take your rental car with only your photo card licence, although this is at the discretion of the local office (officially both parts are required). To find out, contact the rental branch before booking.

Avis Preferred customers

Many Avis Preferred customers are business rental customers. If you are renting on business account using your company’s insurance then it is not imperative for you to show your driver’s licence, as your company should ensure you have a valid licence (although rental agents will normally ask for this for duty of care reasons).

If this is not the case, the usual driving licence requirements apply to Avis Preferred customers.

The address on a licence is out of date

If the address on your driving licence is out of date or different to the billing address that you used to book your car, you can still collect your rental car in the UK or abroad.
