The latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, hit the big screen last weekend breaking box office records. But, did you know that James Bond is a customer of ours? In “Tomorrow Never Dies”, it was Avis that Mr. Bond selected for his car rental needs (either that or we have negotiated preferred supplier status with MI6), hiring a car with us from our rental office at Hamburg airport. Clearly our Rapid Return service wasn’t quite good enough for our heroic secret agent. Not cont Read More >>

On Saturday the Avis UK team were crowned champions of Europe having won the Avis We Kick Harder football tournament in Frankfurt, Germany. It was no easy ride with us having to defy the England team’s terrible history with penalties, winning both the final (against the Swiss team) and the semi-final on spot kicks – a fixture that saw us banish those heart-breaking memories of World Cup ’90 and Euro ’96 by beating one of the Germany-based team. The UK team (pictured left) Read More >>
Acknowledging achievement is quickly becoming a theme on the blog as today I would like to recognise my Marketing colleague and past flat mate Chris Wickson (pictured far right in the photo), who, along with three of his friends from university (pictured with Chris), was a finalist at the inaugural HSBC Unipreneur of the Year. The award has been set-up to recognise those students and graduates who represent the UK’s newest and brightest breed of budding entrepreneurs rewarding the overall Read More >>
I met with our PR agency the other day and in our meeting they handed me a photocopy of a newspaper article from the Newcastle based Sunday Sun, which they suggested I should feature on the blog. Intrigued I quickly cast my eye over it. The first paragraph introduced an Anthony Smith, a fleet manager from Whickham, Gateshead who had been shortlisted for the Tomy “Daddy Idol” award, based “on his looks” and “what makes him a good dad”. After doing double take o Read More >>
While our very first blog posts were written in January last year, we did not actually launch the blog to the public until March. By my calculations, that makes the We Try Harder blog a year old this month! I still remember waiting excitedly for the first comments to come in (sad I know), and will never forget the time when one of our shareholders wrote a comment, expressing his concern that launching a blog was not a worthwhile investment (to reassure our shareholders, creating a blog does not Read More >>
We’re running a bit late writing our first blog post for the week with the team attending the annual Avis UK conference over the past couple of days. It was a great conference with everyone leaving energised and committed to delivering on our goals for the year ahead. However, for me, the nicest thing about going to these conferences is to get out of head office and spend some time with those people who are the most critical to the success of Avis – the staff at our rental stations w Read More >>

We’re proud of our We Try Harder heritage at Avis. We thought we’d start taking the opportunity on this blog to recognise those people who we feel really demonstrate the We Try Harder ethos. These are the unsung heroes who often go the extra mile with little reward or recognition for themselves. To start, we thought we would recognise one of our own. Dean Miller is taking time out of his busy role as Station Manager at Avis Taunton to travel to South Africa to help an orphanage becom Read More >>
As you may have gathered from my previous posts, I like to travel. So, now we’ve moved into 2008, I’m already planning the destinations I’d like to visit this year. The current favourites at the moment are Thailand, Italy and Germany. But, for those short breaks in the UK where somewhere closer is needed, I’ve been looking at Liverpool. Last week Liverpool kicked off a special year for the city with its new title as the European Capital of Culture. Being a music fan, who wouldn’t Read More >>
How many people can say that they work with a world champion? Not many, I guess. However, happily, I can count myself among the few who can. My colleague, Matt Ensor (he’s the one on the left), was part of the Great Britain team in the recent World Long Range Rifle Championship in Canada. The team took 1st place in all the major individual and team competitions and during the tour (which was his first full International Cap), Matt and the GB team broke 7 world records in their pursuit of t Read More >>
