Below is the text of a complaint I have sent about Avis in Cyprus:

    Dear Sirs,

I am writing to inform you of the bad practices currently employed by Avis Cyprus, which would prevent me from using them again.

My main complaint is about their fuel charge policy. They provided no reimbursement for fuel of any kind. This is in your terms and conditions, and would be reasonably OK if a reasonable price were charged for a full tank of petrol. But in my case, Avis insisted on receiving 85 Euros. I filled the tank twice during my rental period, on the second occasion letting the needle drop below the “empty” mark. On the first occasion I paid 38 euros, and on the second 42 euros. I fail to see how it could possibly cost more than 50 euros to fill the tank even if it were completely drained.

The result is not only that the customer feels cheated (a very nasty feeling at the start of the holiday) but that Avis Cyprus are gaining an unfair advantage over their more ethical competitors by quoting a low daily rate to get the business, and then cheating the customer for their profit margin. If a customer were hiring a car for only a few days, the “fuel surcharge” could be greater than the cost of the hire.

A secondary complaint is that instead of supplying my ordered Corsa (or equivalent) I was supplied with a Kia Cerato that had a considerable number of dents and scratches, a missing fog-light in the rear bumper and stained and mouldy rear seat. I would suggest that it should have been retired from the fleet some time ago – even though its recorded mileage was not high. It was also an automatic car (which I did not order – I have strong preference for manual) and was rather less nimble and much less economical than a Corsa would have been.

I have no complaint about your company’s booking service as such, but if you use such disreputable business partners I would very much hesitate to use your service again. I was shocked that such a big international name as Avis should have such very poor representation in Cyprus. The desk clerk asserted that Avis Cyprus had nothing whatever to do with Avis International, merely using the name, though other sources suggested that it is an officially franchised operator.

Could I please ask you to send us your reservation details to comments@avis.co.uk and our customer service team can investigate the issue?

    Many thanks
    Sabrina
